Museums in Times of Polarization: Dialogue, Difficult Pasts, and the Ethical Construction of Shared Futures

The ICOFOM Annual Symposium 2026 will be held entirely online, through three live webinars taking place on 19 November, 26 November, and 3 December 2026.

Within this framework, contributors are invited to address—though are by no means limited to—the following themes, which will be explored across the webinars:

Webinar 1. Museums in a Polarized World

Webinar 2. Negotiating Difficult Pasts: Memory, Representation, and Ethical Responsibility

Webinar 3. Imagining the Museum of Tomorrow

Important Dates

  • Call for Papers opens: 20 July 2026
  • Submission deadline: 30 August 2026
  • Notification of acceptance: Second half of September 2026

Submission Guidelines in brief:

The Organizing Committee invites proposals under two participation formats, depending on the nature and scope of the contribution:

1. Individual or Joint Papers (15-minute presentations)

2. Quick Fire Presentations (5–7 minutes)

Contributions must consist of the full paper, with a maximum length of 12,000 characters, including notes and references, in accordance with the ICOFOM submission guidelines.
