CFP: Provenance

The Society of Georgia Archivists and Provenance editorial board are pleased to announce that they have moved to an open access model for the journal. All issues will be available online as soon as they are ready for publication, removing the one year embargo on content that had previously been in place.We hope this shift will better meet the needs of the profession and provide more timely research and commentary on the topics that matter most to the field. Call for Papers

Provenance: The Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists, a peer reviewed academic publication, seeks articles on archival theory and practice for the 2020 issue. Please note that the content of the journal is not limited to the state of Georgia, and articles of regional or national significance are welcome. First-time authors are especially encouraged to submit articles for consideration. Provenance is also interested in innovative and unique methods for presenting scholarly content. Please contact Heather Oswald if you would like to discuss an article idea or format.

Articles on archival topics outside of theory and practice which meet publication standards will also be considered. Typical papers should be a Word document, 10-20 pages, double spaced, and formatted according to the 17th edition of the Chicago Manual of Style. Please review information for contributors: digitalcommons.kennesaw.edu/provenance/policies.html.

Articles are to be submitted utilizing Provenance’s online system: digitalcommons.kennesaw.edu/provenance.

Gracy Award 

Each year the SGA awards the Gracy Award, a $350 prize which recognizes a superior contribution to Provenance. Named for David B. Gracy II, founder and first editor of Georgia Archive, the award began in 1990 and is judged by the editorial board.

The Reading Room Ceases Publication

As of 2020, The Reading Room: A Journal of Special Collections has ceased publication. This scholarly journal was committed to providing current research and relevant discussion of practices in a special collections library setting. The Reading Room sought submissions from practitioners and students involved with working in special collections in museums, historical societies, corporate environments, public libraries and academic libraries. Topics included exhibits, outreach, mentorship, donor relations, teaching, reference, technical and metadata skills, social media, “Lone Arrangers”, management and digital humanities. The journal featured single-blind, peer-reviewed research articles and case studies related to all aspects of current special collections work.

New Case Study: Engaging History of Science Students with Primary Sources

Despite a significant portion of non-English science and technology texts, Leigh Rupinski, archivist in Special Collections and University Archives at Grand Valley State University Libraries, devises an interactive lesson plan to engage history of science students visiting the archives. Read all about it in “Bingo! Engaging History of Science Students with Primary Sources,” which is the thirteenth case in the open access series Case Studies on Teaching With Primary Sources sponsored by SAA’s Reference, Access, and Outreach Section.

ATALM Presentations available

We have good news! The narrated presentations of nineteen sessions recorded at the 2019 Association of Tribal Archives, Libraries, and Museums (ATALM) Annual Conference, held in Temecula, California, are now available on the Sustainable Heritage Network. Each of these sessions were included in the conference’s Professional Development Certificate program and correlate with either the Library Services and Programs Certificate or the Language Preservation and Revitalization Certificate.

We are pleased to share these ATALM sessions from forty-two experts working in archives, libraries, and museums across the United States. This new set of resources covers language documentation, grant writing and reporting, international collaborations, digital records management, photo digitization, or community engagement, and more. Journal of Western Archives Honors Best General Interest Articles 

The recipient of the Journal of Western Archives award for Best General Interest Article is ‘”The Right to Know’: Decolonizing Native American Archives,” which focuses on the movement to restore control of tribal history to Indigenous peoples, by Jennifer O’Neal from the University of Oregon Libraries Special Collections and University Archives. In addition, the committee awarded an honorable mention to “Jumping In: Creating an Assessment Program for the L. Tom Perry Special Collections Reading Room, coauthored by Cindy Brightenburg and SAA Publications Board member Gordon Daines, both from Brigham Young University. “Jumping In” pioneers the application of the new SAA/RBMS guidelines for public service metrics, provides original user services data, and offers a model that can be adapted for use at other institutions. Congrats to all!

Welcome to Reviews in Digital Humanities

Reviews in Digital Humanities, edited by Dr. Jennifer Guiliano and Dr. Roopika Risam, is the pilot of a peer-reviewed journal and project registry that facilitates scholarly evaluation and dissemination of digital humanities work and its outputs. We accept submissions of projects that blend humanistic and technical inquiry in a broad range of methods, disciplines, scopes, and scales. These include but are not limited to: digital archives, multimedia or multimodal scholarship, digital exhibits, visualizations, digital games, and digital tools. We particularly encourage submission of digital scholarship in critical ethnic, African diaspora, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian American, and postcolonial studies.
