Call for Proposals: A special issue of Across the Disciplines, Spring 2021 Unsettling Archival Research Across the Disciplines: Engaging Critical, Communal, and Digital Archives

This special issue of Across the Disciplines invites scholars to explore what it means to unsettle archival research across the disciplines. Efforts have long been underway to decolonize archival work and archival holdings, to repatriate artifacts, to change derogatory terms in finding aids, to consult with community members about appropriate protection of sacred artifacts, and to heal and reconcile in the wake of wounded/wounding histories (Till; Brasher et al.). Much work has attended to unsettling and wrestling with archives. From one perspective, settler archives are a storehouse for the West’s fictions and myths and a premier site of production for colonial difference, demanding a recovery of absences and silences (García). Yet, despite these important interventions, institutional archives with colonial roots continue to grow, collecting artifacts outside of the communities to which they belong; university archives continue to occupy Native American lands; and governments and corporations surveil our behavior and organize our personal data into digital archives, often with harmful consequences. Such institutions often remain wound(ed/ing) spaces and places.

This special issue of ATD welcomes both critiques of archiving as a set of institutional practices, ideologies, and conventions, and new tactics of critical, communal, and digital archiving within and against those systems of power. We invite scholars to highlight critical, communal, and digital approaches to archival work, to consider how radical political approaches might support them, to reflect on how to counteract and resist racist, colonial histories, and to explore alternatives, perhaps through decolonial, engaged, reciprocal, or collaborative archival practices. We encourage scholars to consider multimodal and digital technologies (Enoch & Bessette), Indigenous methodologies (Cushman, Powell, Tuhiwai Smith, Wilson), decolonial theories (García & Baca; Ruiz & Sánchez), feminist approaches (Enoch, Gaillet, Ramírez, Royster and Kirsch), antiracist efforts (Archives for Black Lives in Philadelphia), queer and trans practices (Bessette, Rawson), disability studies (Brilmyer, Dolmage, McRuer, White), and other perspectives for reconsidering archival research.

Critical, communal, and digital archives often respond to a political moment, to social and cultural conditions, and to the needs of a community by reclaiming and/or retooling certain archival practices, sometimes rewriting archival conventions altogether. For example, marginalized communities and groups do not collect for the sake of collection. They often collect with the survival of their future generations in mind and to pass down their histories. This special issue invites contributions that shed light on how tactical archival practices can decenter, reshape, unsettle and rewrite traditional archival methodologies.

We invite scholars from across the disciplines, including the arts, humanities and social sciences, to submit a contribution in any of the following formats:

1. full-length essays (6,000 – 8,000 words) that unsettle archival research across the disciplines, including methodological interventions, theoretical approaches, praxis in critical, communal, and digital archival building, ethical explorations, community-engaged projects, critical reflections on affect and the consequences of archival research, and more.

2. multimodal projects that explore the affordances of a variety of digital media platforms for the purpose of critical, communal, and digital archiving, as well as projects that attend to the importance of materiality, ephemera, and the artifactual (Pahl & Rowsell; Wysocki & Sheridan).

3. shorter essays (2,500-3,000 words) that might interrogate a key term, offer a critical case study, examine a communal collection, recover a neglected site, repurpose a digital archive, or share a pedagogical application. We have designed the shorter essays to make it possible for graduate students, adjunct faculty, activists, emerging, contingent, underrepresented scholars, and other rebel voices to contribute to this special issue.

Contributors to this special issue may wish to consider the following questions:

  • How might we unsettle institutional archives, given that place-based archives are often housed in institutions such as university and community libraries, historical societies, museums, medical schools, national monuments, national archives and special collections, and research centers? How might we re-envision common features such as curated materials, organized collections, finding aids, and procedures for handling materials to avoid re-inscribing colonial, racist, and sexist perspectives (Archivists Against History Repeating Itself)?
  • How might we create, curate, and work with ephemeral archives, counter-archives, community-engaged and community-generated archives, archives-in-the-making, virtual or digital archives, rebel archives, impromptu archives? What are their affordances and limitations?
  • What does it mean to collect and curate artifacts? Who decides what’s worth collecting, and who is left out of the conversation? Is it possible to both collect and contextualize? How might we write histories of gaps, absences, and missing voices?
  • What new tactics emerge in critical, communal, and digital archiving within and against systems of power? How do we reassess our digital archival practices, in particular, in light of recent concerns about access, digital privacy, surveillance, and data collection (Beck)?
  • How can archives assist in delinking (García & Baca) and decolonial praxis projects (García)? Can archives undermine the logic of the colonial imaginary by helping us get to the locally situated practices that decoloniality calls for?
  • How do archival professionals engage with troubling, haunting, and problematic collections? What are best practices and challenges today for unsettling archival research? How do archives and archivists approach issues of coloniality?
  • How might we address the affective dimensions and emotional labor of archival research (Powell)? How might we honor “reciprocity, respect, and relational accountability” (Wilson), collaborate with the non-living, engage with the past, present, and future?
  • How do we address questions of labor—the time, resources, space, and travel often required to engage in archival research? What are the consequences of such constraints for graduate students, adjunct faculty, activists, emerging, contingent, underrepresented scholars who may be particularly vulnerable and underfunded?

New Journal: Journal of Library Outreach and Engagement

Focus and Scope

The mission of the Journal of Library Outreach & Engagement (JLOE) is to serve as the premier peer-reviewed, open access interdisciplinary journal to advance library outreach and engagement. JLOE provides a platform to disseminate original research that examines public and community engagement initiatives and stimulates a forum to discuss the methodological and epistemological issues that inform, or emerge from, such projects and programs.

Frequency and Schedule of Publication

We will publish two issues per year, one fall and one spring issue. Each issue will contain a letter from the editor(s), a minimum of four scholarly articles, and optionally a handful of “Idea Lab” and “Notes from the Field” columns, and/or book reviews.

Types of Content Included

We welcome articles or editorials that present original research, case studies, or comparable material that advance library outreach and engagement discussions. Authors and their submissions represent libraries of all types, including academic, public, school, and special libraries and archives.

Scholarly Review

Scholarly submissions will undergo a double-blind peer review process.

Open Access and Copyright Policies

The Editors and Editorial Board of JLOE strongly encourages authors to publish the Work under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license (CC BY 4.0) that allows others to distribute, remix, tweak, and build upon the Work, even commercially, as long as they credit the Author for the original creation. Open Call for Article Proposals or Full Articles
Besides our regular themed issues, VIEW Journal now accepts article proposals and full articles for its first open issue. We encourage scholars and audiovisual archivists to use this open call to provide (suggestions for) articles and audiovisual essays, as well as other forms of reflective thought.

Aims and Scope
VIEW Journal of European Television History and Culture is the first peer-reviewed, multi-media and open access e-journal in the field of European television history and culture. It offers an international platform for outstanding academic research and archival reflection on television as an important part of European cultural heritage. The journal is open to many disciplinary perspectives on European television – including television history, media studies, media sociology, cultural studies and television studies. The journal acts as a space for critical reflection on the cultural, social and political role of television in Europe’s past and present. It also provides a multi-media platform for the presentation and re-use of digitized audiovisual material.

In bridging the gap between academic and archival concerns for television and in analyzing the political and cultural importance of television in a transnational and European perspective, the journal aims at establishing an innovative platform for the critical interpretation and creative use of digitized audio-visual sources. In doing so, it challenges a long tradition of television research that was – and to a huge amount still is – based on the analysis of written sources.

Submitting an Article Proposal or Full Article

For our forthcoming open issue (publication in spring 2021), co-edited by Mari Pajala and Liam Wylie, we invite both creative article ideas in the form of extended proposals and full articles for peer review.

  • Send in your article proposals in the form of extended abstracts at the latest by Feb 1st, 2020, via e-mail, to journal [at] euscreen.eu. Selected abstracts will receive an invitation for full articles within a few weeks.
  • It is also possible to submit full articles up until Jun 1st, 2020, at the very latest. Please submit full articles via the VIEW Submissions form

Audience

The journal aims at stimulating new narrative forms of online storytelling, making use of the rich digitized audiovisual collections of television archives around Europe. Authors are encouraged to make use of audio-visual sources to be embedded in the narrative of the articles: not as “illustrations” of a historical or theoretical argumentation, but as problematized evidence of a research question.

VIEW Journal of European Television History and Culture addresses the scientific community as well as a wider audience interested in television as a cultural phenomenon. Broadcast historians, media studies scholars, audiovisual archivists, television professionals as well as the large group of enthusiastic fans of “old” television will have the opportunity to dive into the history and presence of European television by means of multi-media texts.

KULA: Knowledge Creation, Dissemination, and Preservation Studies (https://kula.uvic.ca/) is a peer-reviewed, open-access online journal that publishes multidisciplinary scholarship about the creation, dissemination, and preservation of knowledge. We invite abstracts for contributions to a special issue of KULA on Indigenous Knowledges, to be published in 2021.

The Building Reconciliation Forum is an annual national forum that works toward implementing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action within post-secondary institutions. In November 2018, the University of Victoria hosted the fourth annual forum, the theme of which was Ts’its’u’ watul tseep, a Hul’q’umi’num teaching that means “to help one another.” In direct response to the forum, as part of its commitment to implementing the TRC’s Calls to Action in universities, the University of Victoria Libraries made “Building Reconciliation through Archives” the topic of its annual University Librarian’s Lecture. The 2019 lecture presented a panel discussion with Ry Moran, Carey Newman, and Shelagh Rogers about the past, present, and future of Indigenous documentary heritage. The panelists considered questions such as: What is the relationship between documentary heritage and oral history, land, and historical context? Does ceremony have a role in animating archives? Should documentary heritage held by institutions be returned to communities? How can our approach to Indigenous archives deepen our understanding of the meaning of truth and reconciliation?

Some of the issues the panelists raised during this discussion include:

  • the complicity of archives in the deliberate, violent erasure of Indigenous languages and cultures and the myth of archives as an antidote to the “loss” of cultural heritage
  • the importance of living heritage, particularly the knowledge of Elders (e.g., in addressing inaccuracies in colonial narratives about the history of land and land use, which are preserved in the written record of agencies such as Parks Canada), and the need to create space in libraries and archives for the preservation of intangible cultural heritage as well as documentary heritage
  • the Indigenous perspective of land as a source of knowledge and wisdom, connected to culture, language, and world view–a kind of archival record–and environmental destruction as a threat to the land and the knowledge it holds.
  • the challenge of building a future based on reconciliation when many non-Indigenous people still do not understand Canada’s colonial history or how the concentric harms of colonial genocide continue to affect the lives Indigenous Peoples
  • the various ways that individual Indigenous communities view ownership of tangible objects/land and intangible stories/songs

This special issue is inspired by the panelists’ discussion, and it aims to expand the scope of that conversation by considering the broader category of Indigenous Knowledges. We have deliberately titled the issue Indigenous Knowledges, and we seek to include a range of diverse contributions that reflect this plurality, both in subject and format. We encourage submissions on diverse aspects of Indigenous Knowledges and ways of knowing, including but not limited to:

  • Language; language revitalization; translation
  • Art, literature, and music
  • Governance, laws, Protocols, and justice systems
  • Educational systems
  • Traditional Knowledges, including medicinal and environmental knowledge
  • Oral Traditions
  • Spiritual beliefs and practices
  • Preservation, protection, and custodianship of documentary heritage, intangible cultural heritage, and cultural and ceremonial sites
  • Repatriation of documentary and cultural heritage, including ceremonial objects and human remains
  • Ethics of exhibiting and digitising documentary and cultural heritage; the right to privacy
  • Teaching methods in elementary, secondary, and post-secondary education, including content development and best practices for teaching curricula about the history and legacy of residential schools, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and Treaties and Indigenous rights
  • Librarianship
  • Methods, politics, and ethics of data collection and access to data related to Indigenous Peoples
  • Research practices and methodologies
  • Knowledge systems and policy design in academic and research institutions

We are seeking contributions in diverse formats: short- to medium-length scholarly articles; book reviews; project reports; teaching reflections and syllabi; and creative text, image, video, and audio pieces. We invite submissions that incorporate or propose innovative citational practices. We also welcome submissions from youth contributors. Please note that proposals about any non-Indigenous-led projects that do not express clear Indigenous participation, consultation, and relationship from inception will not be considered.

Please submit abstracts of 300-500 words to kulajournal@uvic.ca by 30 November 2019. Based on these abstracts, we will then invite authors to submit full pieces for editorial consideration and, if applicable, peer review.

CFP: Society of Florida Archivists Journal, vol. 2, no. 1 (2019)

The Society of Florida Archivists Journal (SFAJ) seeks articles that foster exciting conversations about progressive archival approaches and best practices in the state of Florida and beyond. Submissions that explore current developments, shared challenges, and untapped opportunities in archives, records management, and the curatorial sciences are encouraged for SFAJ vol. 2, no. 1 (2019).

Individual and co-authors are encouraged to submit works including, but not limited to: research papers, case studies, presentation proceedings, literature reviews, book and tool reviews, reflective essays, and works in progress.
