Call for Posters: Northwest Archivists Annual Meeting

The Northwest Archivists 2025 Program Committee welcomes poster proposals in broad support of the Annual Meeting theme Redefining Resilience: Advocacy, Values, and Creative Solutions. The conference will be held virtually May 13-16, 2025.  In the past decade or more, archives have lost staff and funding but are continually asked to do the same amount of work or even add more work. It is time to reframe the conversation from “doing more with less” to “doing our best with less.” What core functions of archives should be prioritized? What can we let go of? As archivists, how are we finding tools and building skills to fill the gap of what has been lost? How do we empower representation while protecting personal and professional boundaries? This theme invites proposals that cover practical solutions to these problems, ideas for advocating and collaborating for more resources, and suggestions for how to incorporate the new realms of blockchain, artificial intelligence, and digital preservation into our work. Students, new professionals, first-time presenters, and those in allied professions are encouraged to submit proposals.

Posters can be used to convey a variety of outcomes and ideas related to practice, theory, or research. Examples include – but are not limited to – summarizing an internship project, highlighting a workflow, demonstrating the use of a tool or technology, conveying an outreach or advocacy strategy, getting feedback about projects in progress, or sharing research findings.

Submit your proposal using the 2025 Poster Proposal Form. 

Proposals will be evaluated on clarity, originality, relevance to the field, and relation to the annual meeting theme.

The deadline for proposals is March 14, 2025. Notification will be made the week of March 17.

The Preservation Publication Award Committee welcomes nominations of outstanding preservation-related works of relevance to the North American archives community that were published in 2024. 

Nominated works may include articles, reports, chapters, or monographs in an audiovisual, digital, or print format. Works may cover topics related to analog or digital preservation, and the award includes a cash prize of $750.

Session Proposals
The Program Committee is seeking Session Proposals related to all aspects of archival practice, theory or research that is broadly related to the theme. Any and all ideas are welcome! We especially invite those in allied professions as well as graduate and undergraduate students to participate.

Deadlines
Session proposals for the NWA 2025 Annual Meeting are due on Friday, February 7 by
11:59pm Pacific Time. Acceptances will be communicated to presenters in March 2025.

CFP: Alaska Historical Society Annual Conference

Call for Papers

CORDOVA, ALASKA • OCTOBER 9-12, 2024

Located near the mouth of the Copper River, the site was a crossroads of trade and interaction among Eyak, Tlingit, Ahtna and Chugach peoples when Europeans sailed into Prince William Sound in the 1700s. Founded in 1909 as a railway terminus to deliver copper from the Kennecott Mines, Cordova also was near Katalla, Alaska’s earliest oil field. Fishing is the town’s major industry today.

OUR THEME

This year’s theme, “Rights and Responsibilities,” speaks broadly to Alaska’s history of determining which people and groups should have rights, and what responsibilities are attached to those rights. Disputes over rights and responsibilities have spanned Alaska history, including voting rights for women and Alaska’s Native people, fish traps and limited entry fisheries, subsistence rights, taxation, the Alaska Permanent Fund and responding to the Exxon Valdez oil spill.

OUR PROGRAM

The conference will open with a Wednesday reception, with papers presented the following three days. Friday’s focus is on Prince William Sound topics and speakers. While presentations that address the conference theme are encouraged, the society welcomes proposals for papers, panels, roundtables, films or workshops on any aspect of Alaska history. The theme echoes the upcoming year’s National History Day theme, and students and teachers are especially encouraged to participate.

OUR KEYNOTE

This year’s keynote presenter is former Alaska Lt. Gov. Fran Ulmer, an international climate change expert. She brings a broad perspective on Alaska’s history by virtue of her extensive public service as a policy analyst for Gov. Jay Hammond, Juneau mayor and state legislator.

To propose a presentation, please email a title, proposal of 100 words and two-sentence biography to members@alaskahistoricalsociety.org. Typically, presentations are 20 minutes in length. Abstract submission deadline: May 31, 2024.

In 2024, the Spokane community will observe and celebrate the 50th anniversary of Expo ‘74, Spokane’s World’s Fair, the first such exposition to focus on the environment. Taking inspiration from the Fair, our theme is Seeking Balance: Sustainability and Adaptation. This theme invites consideration of how issues related to the environment, sustainability and adaptation intersect with archives and allied professions. While we seek balance, we are frequently required to adapt and react to changing circumstances. We must also be responsive to the changing climate, to different resource allocations, to new staffing models, and much, much more.
