Call for Submissions: MARAC Arline Custer Memorial Award

The Arline Custer Memorial Award Committee seeks submissions for its annual award recognizing the best books and articles written or compiled by individuals and institutions in the Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference (MARAC) region – the District of Columbia, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Works under consideration include, but are not limited to, monographs, popular narratives, reference works and exhibition catalogs using archival sources. Works must be relevant to the general public as well as the archival community and published between July 1, 2024 and June 30, 2025.

All submissions must be received by July 31, 2025.

Electronic submissions in PDF format of the entire work are encouraged. Submissions and a letter of nomination should be sent to Senior Committee Co-Chair Sarah E. The Arline Custer Memorial Award is presented by the MARAC Arline Custer Memorial Award Committee.  This award honors the memory of Arline Custer (1909-1975), MARAC member and editor of the National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections.

Eligibility

The Arline Custer Memorial Award recognizes the best books and articles written or compiled by individuals and institutions in the MARAC region – the District of Columbia, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.

Works under consideration include, but are not limited to: monographs, popular narratives, reference works and exhibition catalogs using archival sources.

Individuals or institutions may submit up to two works published between July 1, 2023 and June 30, 2024.

Evaluation

Works must be relevant to the general public as well as the archival community. They also should be original and well researched using available sources. In addition, they should be clearly presented, well written and organized. Visual materials, if used, should be appropriate to the text.

Compiled works or works with multiple authors-such as edited volumes, co-authored works, or journals-will be reviewed in their entirety. Portions of a multiple-author work that do not meet award requirements may impact the submission’s final scoring.

Preference will be given to works by archivists.

Award

Up to three awards may be given, with a maximum value of $200.00 for books and $100.00 for articles. The 2024 award(s) may be announced at the fall 2024 MARAC business meeting or shared with MARAC members via another means.

CFP: MARAC Fall 2024 Meeting

The Program Committee for the Fall 2024 Virtual Meeting being held on November 13-15, 2024 is formally opening the call for proposals. Inspired by ongoing commemorations of the 100th anniversary of the Harlem Renaissance, the theme is “Renaissance & Renewal.” The Program Committee invites session proposals that celebrate and explore creativity, advocacy, versatility, and innovation in archival work. Potential session topics might include:

  • Emerging technologies (AI, VR) or using technology to look at collections in new ways (data sets, digital humanities projects)
  • Career reinvention, pivots, skills development, or reconfigured responsibilities
  • Initiatives to highlight overlooked or underrepresented voices
  • New perspectives on community engagement, partnerships, audiences, and stakeholders

The Program Committee is committed to incorporating diverse perspectives within the program and across the entire conference. Session proposals should reflect varied personal and professional experiences, including individual, institutional, and geographic diversity. The Program Committee is also interested in supporting a range of session types, including panel presentation or discussions, lightning talks, mini-workshops, case studies, and birds of a feather.

2023 C. Herbert Finch Online Publication Award
The MARAC Finding Aid Awards Committee welcomes submissions for the 2023 C. Herbert Finch Online Publication Award. This award recognizes online publications, including virtual exhibitions, web sites, web pages and other digital tools that promote the use of archival materials.

To be eligible for the award, an online publication must have a stable internet address and must have been published between July 1, 2022 and June 30, 2023. The award is only open to repositories in the MARAC region and all submissions must be received by July 31, 2023.

Call for Submissions: MARAC Technical Leaflet Series

A note from the Technical Leaflets Editorial Board:

Dear MARAC members,

The Communications Committee is seeking new submissions and suggestions for the MARAC Technical Leaflet Series, (Print ISSN 2577-9400 and Electronic ISSN 2577-9419), a double-blind, peer-reviewed serial publication that provides practical guidance for specific archival tasks not commonly addressed in the professional literature.
Since 2018, the Editorial Board of the Technical Leaflet Series is aiming to produce at least two publications per calendar year (spring and winter). Topics of particular interest for future publications may include:

  • Creating and maintaining acquisitions files
  • Curation and storage of oversize objects and realia
  • Data analytics
  • Diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility initiatives for archives
  • Handling of classified or proprietary materials in a government or corporate repository
  • Oral history in archives
  • Preservation, handling, and description of any of the following:
    • 19th-century photographs
    • Audio-visual materials
    • Datasets
    • Email
    • Textile materials
  • Reparative (re)processing of archival materials
  • Web archiving

Please submit any proposals or topic suggestions to marac.communications@gmail.com. Publication guidelines for submissions are available on the MARAC website. Authors are encouraged to observe a soft limit of 25-30 pages of content. Fall 2020 submissions have a projected publication date of December 2021 for our Winter issue.
