Call for Nominations: AHS Archival History Article Award

The Archival History Section (AHS) is seeking nominations for its annual AHS Archival History Article award. The prize encourages and rewards an article or other short piece of excellence in the field of archival history, regardless of subject, time period, or national boundaries. Stand-alone chapters in edited essay collections or anthologies will also be considered. Nominations may include works by archivists as well as by others writing scholarly works on the history of records and archives. The work must be published in English during the previous calendar year (January-December 2023).

Winners of the 2023 Janette Harley Prize announced

The British Records Association is delighted to announce the winners of the 2023 Janette Harley Prize. The Prize is shared between two entries as follows:

Dr Ian Forrest and Christopher Whittick (translators and editors), for The Visitation of Hereford Diocese in 1397 (Canterbury & York Society, vol. CXI, 2021)

Dr Imogen Peck (Birmingham University), for “‘Of no sort of use’?: Manuscripts, Memory, and the Family Archive in Eighteenth Century England” (Cultural and Social History, vol. 20:2 for 2023, pp.183-204), and the accompanying blog series and online resources, part of the ‘Family Archives in Early Modern England’ research project supported by the Leverhulme Trust.

These contrasting prize-winners show the breadth and value of archival records, and the different ways in which they can be studied and made more accessible.

Forrest and Whittick: Bishops learn about their dioceses through visitations. Surviving medieval visitation records are rare and of great value to historians. Bishop John Trefnant’s visitation of his diocese of Hereford in 1397 is contained in Hereford Cathedral Archives (HCA) 1779. The visitation offers unparalleled insight into social life, sexual behaviour, religious belief and practice, and gender relations during a period of religious and political turmoil, revealing how the clergy were disciplined, how English- and Welsh-speakers interacted, and how the congregation experienced worship. It is also a treasure trove of information about the fabric of local churches and the administration of parishes before the Reformation. The document is a major early source for Welsh naming practices – indeed Bishop Trefnant himself came from a Welsh area, had a Welsh name, and employed Welsh-speaking scribes in his household.

This edition is designed for the non-professional reader, being the first of the Canterbury and York Society’s 111 volumes to be published in the original Latin with a facing English translation. Conscious attempts have been made to preserve the word-order of the original as far as is consistent with fluency of translation, and to avoid technical vocabulary. The edition has greatly increased the accessibility of the manuscript, which now is consulted as a matter of course by the Diocesan Advisory Committee on questions of church fabric.

Imogen Peck: Dr Peck’s work explores the role of family archives during Britain’s long eighteenth century, especially in the formation of memory and identity. This was a period of growing archival consciousness, yet the archives curated by families have hitherto been almost entirely overlooked. This research establishes their significance. It also challenges the tendency to value the institutional and formal (and often patriarchal) over the informal and domestic.

Tracing the curation of three family collections across several generations, the article in Cultural and Social History shows how the creation and transmission of family archives played a significant role in the memory and identity of relatively modest families. The article is supported by blog posts by the author and by undergraduate and A-level students which highlight other family archives held in record offices across the country. The author has also established a ‘Family Archives’ network where historians, archivists, and members of the public working on family collections can share their work. The recordings from the network’s online workshops are available on the project website.

Prof. Steven King (Nottingham Trent University) and Paul Carter (TNA), and others, In Their Own Write: Contesting the New Poor Law, 1834–1900 (McGill-Queen’s University Press, 2022).

The prize was established in memory of Janette Harley, a member of the British Records Association, who died in 2015. It is intended to raise awareness of research and achievements in the world of archives, and is awarded for the best or most original piece of published work which reflects the aims of the Association: to promote the preservation, understanding, accessibility and study of our recorded heritage for the public benefit.

A call for entries to the 2024 Janette Harley Prize will be made in April.

Call for Nominations: NCPH Book Award

2024 SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

The National Council on Public History invites nominations for its annual award for the best published book in public history. The Council seeks works about or growing out of public history theory, study, or practice, or that have compelling implications for the same. Books “growing out of” public history include, but are not limited to, exhibition catalogs, policy studies, and monographs that have a clear public dimension. Whether about or growing out of public history, successful contenders will clearly display the public aspects of their conception, development, and execution, and how they illuminate issues and concerns significant to audiences beyond the academy.

The NCPH Book Award consists of a $1,000 cash prize and a certificate, both presented at the NCPH Annual Meeting (to be held in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 2024). The award winner receives complimentary registration for the awards breakfast.

ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible for consideration, a book must have been published within the previous two calendar years (2022 and 2023). Entries may be monographs, edited collections of articles or essays, or any other published work of comparable scope. Singly and jointly authored/edited works are welcome, as are international topics.

AWARD CRITERIA

Criteria for selection include:

  1. Excellence and thoroughness of research
  2. Style and appropriateness of presentation
  3. Suitability and rigor of methodology
  4. Contribution to advancing the field of public history

(These four criterion receive equal weight in the book award committee’s discussions.)

The list consists of the best print and online historical bibliographies, indexes, reference products, and published primary sources created, published, or significantly updated within the past two calendar years and primarily in English. The 2023 list will consider titles published or significantly updated in 2022 and 2023.

ISHMap Call for Proposals: 2024 Prize for Map Projects

Prize for Projects in Map History 2024

The International Society for the History of the Map (ISHMap) is pleased to invite nominations and self-nominations for its Prize for Projects in Map History.  

The ISHMap Prize in for Projects in Map History, awarded every two years and presented at the ISHMap General Assembly, will recognize a project that explores the history of maps and mapping outside of the format of an academic paper, book, or edited collection in a way that increases accessibility and engagement with maps and map history through innovative presentations. The prize will uplift projects that seek to expand the subjects, audience, scope, and/or methodology of engaging with the history of maps and mapping. Projects can take many forms including, but in no way limited to, physical exhibitions, datasets, online exhibitions, multimedia projects such as podcasts and films, thematic maps, games, and digital products.

The prize, to be announced at the Society’s General Meeting during the ICHC in July 2024, will consider projects that debuted or were substantively updated in 2022 and 2023.

2023 C. Herbert Finch Online Publication Award
The MARAC Finding Aid Awards Committee welcomes submissions for the 2023 C. Herbert Finch Online Publication Award. This award recognizes online publications, including virtual exhibitions, web sites, web pages and other digital tools that promote the use of archival materials.

To be eligible for the award, an online publication must have a stable internet address and must have been published between July 1, 2022 and June 30, 2023. The award is only open to repositories in the MARAC region and all submissions must be received by July 31, 2023.

Call for Nominations: MARAC Arline Custer Memorial Award

DEADLINE:  July 31, 2023 

The Arline Custer Memorial Award is presented by the MARAC Arline Custer Memorial Award Committee.  This award honors the memory of Arline Custer (1909-1975), MARAC member and editor of the National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections. 

Eligibility 

The Arline Custer Memorial Award recognizes the best books and articles written or compiled by individuals and institutions in the MARAC region – the District of Columbia, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia. 

Works under consideration include, but are not limited to: monographs, popular narratives, reference works and exhibition catalogs using archival sources. 

Individuals or institutions may submit up to two works published between July 1, 2022 and June 30, 2023. 

Evaluation 

Works must be relevant to the general public as well as the archival community. They also should be original and well researched using available sources. In addition, they should be clearly presented, well written and organized. Visual materials, if used, should be appropriate to the text. 

Compiled works or works with multiple authors-such as edited volumes, co-authored works, or journals-will be reviewed in their entirety. Portions of a multiple-author work that do not meet award requirements may impact the submission’s final scoring. 

Preference will be given to works by archivists. 

Award 

Up to three awards may be given, with a maximum value of $200.00 for books and $100.00 for articles. The 2023 award(s) may be announced at a fall 2023 MARAC business meeting or shared with MARAC members via another means.
